Several hundred people met in Monroe Park this morning for the final leg of the Richmond version of National Bike To Work Day.

The riders, many of whom came from more than 10 miles away, went from Monroe Park, on the edge of Virginia Commonwealth University’s main academic campus, to the main driveway of the Virginia Capitol.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones hopped on bicycles and rode in the lead two spots in the group, which had a police escort down Franklin Street to the Capitol.

The 7:30 a.m. ride from Monroe Park came after riders met at five spots throughout Richmond and its suburbs earlier in the morning for the ride to downtown.
